A cold-chain checklist for wholesale flower shipments

A useful cold-chain plan defines the product condition, measurement points, packing system, timing and handover responsibilities. It does not replace species-specific post-harvest advice or the carrier’s current requirements.

01

Before harvest or collection

Confirm variety, maturity, cut or collection timing, visual grade, hydration or dry-handling plan, acceptable field heat and maximum time to the next handling point.

02

Conditioning and measurement

Define whether product or ambient temperature is measured, the method, location, frequency and acceptable band. Record deviations and the decision made. A temperature value without a measurement point can mislead.

03

Packing and load preparation

Verify product count, moisture control, ventilation, compression protection, carton closure, labels and gross weight. Pre-cool or condition the packed product only according to the approved product plan.

04

Airport or carrier handover

Record collection time, vehicle condition, terminal acceptance, airway bill reference and any available product or logger reading. Allow for security, inspection and cargo cut-off.

05

Arrival inspection

Inspect labels and cartons before opening, then photograph internal packing and representative product. Record time, condition and temperatures where contracted, and protect evidence for a time-sensitive claim.

06

Questions for the quotation

Ask who owns each handover, which readings or photographs are supplied, how delays are handled, what evidence is required for a claim and which terms control liability.
